Anton Raphael Mengs

Anton Raphael Mengs 1728 ~ 1779 was a German painter, active in Rome, who became one of the precursors to Neoclassical painting.

Neoclassical artists attempted to revive the spirit as well as the forms of ancient Greece and Rome. Mengs’s contribution in this was considerable—he was widely regarded as the greatest living painter of his day. Mengs had a well-known rivalry with the contemporary Italian painter Pompeo Batoni.
