Drawing SchoolPainting School

T

he Painting School program begins after successful completion of the Drawing School program. The shift from drawing to painting will continue to refine previous lessons while introducing the idea of using color to render form in oil paint.

The first cast painting will be completed with a basic warm/cool system of color to familiarize each student with the maximum range of this scale. The second cast painting will progress to seeing actual color relationships and rendering them within the range of a limited palette.  As an intermediate step to working from life, students use this same limited palette over a grisaille underpainting in the tradition of copying from the masters.

Full color compositional sketches introduce the idea of picture making from different periods in the history of Art, and teach us to render the broad effect with an extended palette.  This strengthens the ability to balance academic drawing with impressionistic color, our guiding philosophy behind painting from life.
